The Better Science Initiative was launched by the working group “Critical Discourse on Excellence” at the University of Bern. Building on the concept of “slow science”, the working group developed the ten calls to action of the Better Science Initiative in 2019.
Between 2021 and 2024, the Better Science Initiative was funded as a collaborative project by the swissuniversities federal programme “P-7: Diversity, Inclusion and Equal Opportunities in Higher Education Development". A partnership comprising the University of Bern, the University of Geneva, the School of Education at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW), the University of Lucerne, the University of St. Gallen and Zurich University of the Arts championed the project.
During this period, more than 60 events were held at 20 higher education institutions and organisations.
From 2025 onwards, the University of Bern continued to focus in particular on the area of team culture and developed the ‘Better Science Team Facilitation’ programme for research teams at the University of Bern.
Since 2026, the Better Science Initiative has focused on measures for networking, awareness-raising and communication to promote a sustainable and inclusive scientific culture.
